What is Renal Failure (RF)?

Renal failure, aka kidney failure is the loss of function of the kidney due to damage or disease of the kidney.  There are many different kidney diseases and factors that can contribute to renal failure.  Some of the more common factors include:

* Chronic high blood pressure
* Diabetes
* Cardiovascular disease
* Family history of kidney disease

Some of the less common factors that can lead to renal failure include:

* Obesity
* Autoimmune disease
* Chronic urinary tract infections
* Kidney loss, damage or disease

Ways to Help Prevent Renal Failure*

* Exercise regularly
* Maintain a healthy diet low in salt
* Weight control
* Monitor blood pressure and cholesterol
* No smoking and drink in moderation
* Having an annual physical

*Even taking these precautions may not completely eliminate the risks for kidney disease or failure.  Please consult your physician.

Treatment Options For Renal Failure

Although the most common treatment is dialysis, the focus of this website is on transplantation.  The two most common types of kidney transplants are:

* Living Donor (both compatible and incompatible)
* Deceased Donor
